MAGNET: Do you need funding to help develop a new product?

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

MAGNET administers the New Product Development and Entrepreneurship Program, Product Innovation Loan Fund on behalf of the Cuyahoga County Department of Development.  The fund provides $1.25 million in loan funds for new product development in 2007 and builds upon the $2 million already loaned in previous years.

The process is competitive.  Applicants will have their submissions reviewed and approved by a committee consisting of local business leaders, venture capitalist, designers, entrepreneurs and representatives from Cuyahoga County.  Applications for the current funding round are being accepted with a submission deadline of NOON on Friday, September 28, 2007.  Loans of up to $115,000 can be made in phased increments ranging from $15,000 to $60,000 depending upon how much development has already been completed and what remains to be done.

The loans have an interest rate of 3.5%.  There are no interest or principal payments for the first three years after disbursement.  Small companies of less than $50 million in sales as well as entrepreneurs can use this money to fund their product development process for such activities as market research, patent services, industrial design, engineering and prototyping efforts.

Full details of the program along with application forms are available at http://www.magnetwork.org/programs/cuyahoga-loan-fund.htm.

If you have further questions you can contact Barbara Paul by phone at 216-432-5322, or by email at barbara.paul@magnetwork.org.

Cleveland Clinic Gives OneCommunity $2 million for “OneClassroom” Initiative

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

The Cleveland Clinic is giving OneCommunity $2 million its OneClassroom initiative which aims to enhance educational outcomes for children across Northeast Ohio.

According to a written statement issued from both the Cleveland Clinic and OneCommunity:

The Clinic’s commitment extends the OneCommunity network, already one of the country’s largest and fastest educational broadband networks, to 1,500 public and private schools across 18 counties. It is an extension of the Clinic’s five-year, $10-million commitment in cash and services to support and enhance Northeast Ohio’s regional K-12 schools, which was announced in January 2005. A list of school districts receiving support can be found at http://www.onecommunity.org/.

OneCommunity developed the OneClassroom program in partnership with WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN ideastream and regional leaders from Instructional Technology Centers, higher education, health care providers, teachers, local foundations, and global technology companies. Together the group is developing innovative and transformative approaches to enhance educational learning experiences and workforce development efforts across Northeast Ohio. These efforts are made possible by OneCommunity’s shared digital infrastructure, including its regional fiber-optic communications backbone, and substantial hardware and software resources.

NorTech is part of the group that helped to found OneCommunity in October 2003. NorTech provided critical operating support to OneCommunity until the group spun off in April 2006 and became a seperate 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Lev Gonick, Chief Information Officer of Case Western Reserve University, first proposed the idea of creating a community-based, ultra broadband network.
