Ohio Moves Closer to Passing Great Lakes Compact
One of the more embarrassing episodes in Ohio political bumbling appears about to be coming to an end. State Senator Tim Grendell has relented in his opposition to passage of the Great Lakes Compact, opening the door to approval by the senate and eventually signing by the Governor.
With Cleveland being host (in cooperation with the Great Lakes Commission and the Great Lakes Science Center) to the first convening of a major new Brookings Institution initiative on freshwater technology and policy leadership in the Great Lakes, the fact that Ohio had yet to sign the compact stuck out as a major example of a lack of leadership on our part. Perhaps now we can quickly put this episode behind us and move into equal partnership with our neighboring Great Lakes states and Canada and begin demonstrating true leadership when it comes to the use of one of our most important assets: fresh water.
