Living in a Post-Oil World–Not That Far Away?
Crain’s Cleveland Business this week carries an article about Cleveland Foundation BP Fellow Richard Stuebi’s most recent Cleantech post about changes afoot at ConocoPhillips and what that might indicate about a post-oil world.
According to Crain’s reporter Scott Suttell, “In just the last few weeks, [Stuebi] notes, the company has unveiled a partnership with Tyson Foods to produce biodiesel from animal fats and has joined the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, ‘thereby becoming the first U.S. oil company to declare its support for federal limitations on greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change.’ Its peers among U.S. oil majors, ExxonMobil and Chevron, ‘have also begun making strides on the green-front,’ Mr. Stuebi writes.”
What have the big oil companies figured out that the auto manufacturers haven’t yet? That, as Stuebi points out, “reduced oil demand is unavoidable in the future — not just for environmental reasons, but simply because supplies will be challenging to obtain.”
